Bentsen’s follow up was equally effective and eloquent:

“You're the one who was making the comparison, Senator, and I'm one who knew him well. And frankly I think you're so far apart in the objectives you choose for your country that I did not think the comparison was well taken.”

Regardful of the rapid riposte, marvel too at the quality of Bentsen’s diction. Would that we had such Lincolnesque candidates today.
