Education does not always equal intelligence. Socrates was no friend of democracy; he was an authoritarian. He believed that Greece should be ruled by those “who know.” Namely, philosophers – such as Socrates. Your father may be such a man. Educated, but an authoritarian who would rather dictate to the hoi polloi than engage them.

I prefer Churchill.

BTW, I’m sure you know that Socrates was tried and condemned for teaching the subversion of democracy. The Greeks feared a third attempted overthrow of their self-government after surviving two horrendous takeovers by Socrates’ very own students. The results were mass terror and murder. Those were the youths Socrates was accused of corrupting; contrary to common perception, it was not about sex. [The Trial of Socrates (1988), I. F. Stone]
