I recently read “John Lennon vs. the U.S.A.” by Leon Wildes, J & Y’s immigration attorney. [I have not seen the documentary reversely titled, “The U.S. vs. John Lennon.”] John and Yoko’s fight to stay in America revolved around their status as internationally recognized artists who would contribute to the public good through their art. Intertwined was J & Y’s international fight for custody of Kyoko.

The Lennon’s eventually lost the fight for custody but won the fight for residency in New York. Opposing them was the Nixon administration, Spiro Agnew and Attorney General John Mitchell. The Lennons were also activists for world peace and endeared themselves forever as leaders in the anti-war movement. The Nixon administration fought the Lennons and Nixon and Agnew both resigned in disgrace, and John Mitchell was convicted in the Watergate scandal and spent 19 months in federal prison.

John Lennon is remembered fondly today as a man who practiced what he preached: Peace and Love.

The Nixon administration is remembered for war and corruption and would rather be forgotten.
