In chess, the pawns are most expendable. In war, the politicians and the potentates control the board, and the ‘patriots’ are merely willing but unwitting expendable dupes who think they are fighting for God and Country. They are convinced they are fighting for a just cause. They are convinced their side is the righteous one.

Your history is correct. My myth is metaphor. Both may tell the whole tale.
