In college, I took an elective course in Science Fiction and Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ was the first book assigned. I was disappointed. I wanted the greats: Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Le Guin, Heinlein, Verne, Herbert and Wells. But I read Shelley and I was not disappointed. I was astonished and terrified. The quality of the prose was poetry and I had nightmares for three nights following. To date, ‘Frankenstein’ remains one of the most inspiring and frightening books in my memory.
