It is curious how we only apply ‘race’ to humans, and even though the human race is one race, we insist on self-sorting into various ‘races’ based upon various ethnic traits of inheritance. We call animals who exhibit various inherited traits, but remain the same species, breeds. Yet no one would dare suggest we call each other a certain ‘breed.’ If we do, it is particularly pejorative. Ah, the imperfection of the English language.
‘Ethnicity’ is, I agree, the more appropriate word to replace ‘race.’ We can be proud of our ethnicity without being judgmental. ‘Species’ is perhaps the better word when describing the human ‘race,’ which allows us our mixed progeny without prejudice.
