On a lighter note; there are many, many anecdotes about Wright’s infamous ego. My favorite [this is from the memory of reading so some details may be imprecise but the gist is still there]:
Wright couldn’t abide “modern architecture” or modern architects. He regularly trashed the other greats: Gropius, Mies, Le Corbusier. He also disliked New York as “too European.” Once, he attended a New York society dinner party and got into a row with a modernist proponent. Wright left the party in a huff, or thought he did. Instead of walking out the apartment door the famous architect walked into a walk-in closet. No doubt too embarrassed to admit his mistake he remained there, the host was also too embarrassed to extract him. Neither the guests nor the host would acknowledge anything was amiss and Wright stayed in the closet for the rest of the party. When the party was over the host, still mortified, quietly retired and the next morning checked the closet with great trepidation. Fortunately, Wright had silently departed sometime during the night and the incident was never mentioned in polite circles – until someone wrote the anecdote years later. Knowing of Wright’s insatiable appetite for self-aggrandizement, no one should doubt the story is true.
