The duopoly no longer works, it has run its course. The “lesser of two evils” mantra is exhausted. We need a third party to moderate both the left and the right, to build consensus that cherry-picks the best ideas and bakes a pie not too tart, not too sweet, but just right.

Unfortunately, the duopoly is a direct result of the Framers' design for an Electoral College. The EC can and does manufacture a majority from a minority. No third party is viable in such a system. Double unfortunately, it would take a near impossible constitutional amendment to rid us of the college and create some system of direct-vote run-offs, instant or otherwise.

Neither the Framers nor most Americans, I daresay, want a parliamentary system. But American innovation should be able to come up with a solution to our current self-inflicted mess. It is a rule of engineering that to find a solution to a problem one must first understand the problem. Triple unfortunately, we can’t even agree on what the problem is, let alone agree on a solution.

God speed, this call for an “American Renewal.”
